Report:

Based on the EUCIDA project travel award agreement, Iveta Balčūne - Manager of Luznava Manor, culture and tourism institution and Inga Drele – Culture project coordinator at Luznava Manor (Rezeknes novada pasvaldiba, Latvia, a venue of European Connections in Digital Arts) attended Transmediale 2018 face festival in Berlin from 31.01. – 03.02.2018.

Transmediale is a Berlin-based festival and year-round project that draws out new connections between art, culture, and technology. All activities of transmediale aim at fostering a critical understanding of contemporary culture and politics as saturated by media technologies. The
transmediale festival is an essential event of media art professionals, artists, media activists, researchers and students from all over the world. Since 2011, transmediale also has an all-year ongoing activity, including a residency program. These activities provide a sustainable structure
of feedback, research, and reflection that interacts with the annual festival.

We attended the festival on 01. and 02.02.2018. It was a great possibility for us to be a part of this festival. There were presented and we attended various exhibitions, conferences, workshops, screenings, performances. And specific theme of this year - “face value” provided the framework for all visitors, artists, media activists, researchers, designers, and other creative tinkerers to discuss about art, culture, and technology.

The main exhibition - Territories of Complicity explored how covert systems, technological infrastructures, and zones of exception shape our economic, socio-political realities, migration, how is the backdrop of increasing nationalism and populist demands for immigration caps and
walls—ostensibly to protect national economies and values.

It was a great experience for us to see how the exhibition architecture fuses installations, artistic research, and live project presentations, how the artists unpack, extend, and activate their projects in the form of screenings, performances, workshops, discussions, experimentation, using forensic methods, speculative approaches and showing us notions challenges of value and belonging.

In addition to the festival visit, we had a possibility to join EUCIDA project meeting group. Attending the festival contributed a lot for expanding our horizons of digital arts’ understanding, we got an amazing overview of possibilities in digital arts and culture and will help us to develop future cooperation projects in Luznava Manor.
